Name: Jayne Nakata

Hometown: Te Anau, New Zealand

Occupation: English Conversation Instructor at NOVA, Podcast Host, Producer and Editor

Hello!
My name is Jayne. I came to Iwaki more than 23 years ago. I have worked as a Nova Instructor and also as an English teacher in junior high school and elementary schools in Iwaki. I also host, produce and edit podcasts. I like living in Iwaki because we have lots of beautiful nature, hot springs and delicious food here. I have two children. My son is 11 and plays baseball. My daughter is 14 and is studying in New Zealand. When I have some free time I like to read books, crochet, lift weights and I'm trying to learn to play golf but I am not very good at it.

I started studying Japanese when I was 13 years old. I wanted to do 留学 to Japan but it was too expensive. I kept studying Japanese from text books but I couldn't speak Japanese at all. Finally, after I graduated university I came to Japan and started practicing speaking Japanese every day. At first I was terrible! But slowly I got more confident at speaking Japanese. I realised I just needed to practice speaking more! I hope that by practicing English together you can grow your confidence more before going to study overseas or taking an English exam.

I'm looking forward to studying English together and together we can make your dreams for English come true.

Name: Benjamin McMullen

Hometown: Newcastle, Australia

Occupation: English Conversation Instructor at NOVA

Hello Everyone!

My name is Benjamin MCMULLEN and I have lived in Iwaki since July 2015 after graduating from the University of Newcastle in Australia.

My hometown, Newcastle, is very similar to Iwaki. It has a similar population and, like Iwaki, is located about 2-3 hours north of a big city (Sydney).

I came to Iwaki, Fukushima because I wanted to help promote a positive image of Fukushima after the 3.11 Earthquake.

I came here as a Coordinator of International Relations for Iwaki City Government. My job as CIR involved translating tourist materials for foreign visitors and promoting Iwaki from a foreigner's perspective through free papers and later SNS. During those 5 years as CIR, I got to see the revitalisation of Iwaki's coastline and experience Jangara. I have also tried lots of local food such as Mehikari and Wonderfarm Tomato.

After finishing my 5 years as Iwaki CIR, I briefly worked as a translator before joining NOVA in 2021 as an English Conversation instructor.

Now, my job as an English Conversation Instructor involves teaching English to people of a variety of levels and ages. I also teach English to many high school students, teaching conversations for a variety of situations as well as Eiken, TOIEC and Kyotsu Test lessons.

I personally enjoy teaching high school students the most as I feel like I can help prepare them for the next stages in their life by sharing my knowledge and experiences of Australia and Iwaki with them. If you are interested in someday studying in Australia or any other foreign country I would like to teach you -- in a fun and interactive way -- all the useful phrases and conversation skills necessary for living abroad. I look forward to seeing you soon! Gambappe!
